I seem to remember it was fashionable during the Tokugawa shogunate for upper-class women to wear several layers of these, each with a different color. I remember thinking that it was kind of silly, since you wouldn't see much of it...then I remembered that my culture dictates that my gender expose about 3 inches of necktie under a suit jacket. 8-)Anyway. The multilayer style for women goes back to at least to Heian Japan if not earlier. I'll have to find the name for the style and perhaps do an entry.
